lesson no. 2 Q.8. ‘Wants expand and change with development’ explain.

How Developing Changes What We Want: Simple Explained

Have you ever thought about how different life is today compared to when your parents or grandparents were young? One big reason is that as a country grows and technology improves, people’s desires change. In economics, we call these desires “wants.” A simple rule is that our wants expand (grow more) and change (become different) with development.

Here is a simple look at why this happens and what it means.

What We mean by “Wants” and “Development”

First, let’s understand two basic ideas:

  • Wants: These are the things people desire to have for a better, easier, or more enjoyable life. They are more than just “needs” (like basic food and water).
  • Development: This is when a society improves. It means people earn more money, there is better technology, and many more things are available in shops. It leads to a higher standard of living.

Why Development Makes Wants Grow and Change

As a society or person develops, many changes happen that make us want different things.

1. Lifestyles Change

As people earn more money, their daily life changes. When you are no longer worried about basic survival, you begin to look for comfort and convenience. A simple bicycle might be enough at first. As you develop, you might want a motorcycle, and then a car. What was once seen as a luxury becomes a normal expectation.

2. New Inventions Are Made

Development means smart people are constantly inventing new things. These new items solve old problems and create new desires that didn’t exist before. Think of all the inventions that did not exist 50 years ago, like laptops or tablets. Before they were invented, nobody wanted them because nobody knew they could exist.

3. Standard of Living Rises

As a country’s economy gets stronger, it can afford better things for everyone, like electricity, good roads, and clean water. When basic needs are easily met, people have more freedom to want things related to fun, knowledge, or health. What used to be a special treat becomes a normal part of life. A television went from a rare luxury to something nearly every home wants.

A Simple Example: The Story of Communication

The best way to see how development changes wants is by looking at communication. This is a very simple and clear example.

  • Then (Low Development): Imagine life many decades ago. There were no phones or internet. Communication was slow. A person’s only want for sending a long-distance message was to write a postal letter. Getting a letter was a very special event, and people were satisfied waiting weeks for it.
  • Next (Growing Development): As technology developed, businesses and richer people started using landline telephones. Suddenly, people’s wants changed. They no longer just wanted to send a message; they wanted to talk instantly. This new invention changed what people considered a basic want for communication.
  • Now (High Development): This didn’t stop. Telephones developed into small, powerful computers in our pockets: modern smartphones. Today, the want is not just for talking. People want a device that connects them to the internet, plays video games, takes photos, and keeps them connected with friends all over the world. A simple postal letter is no longer enough. This is a perfect example of a want expanding and changing as development shifts our ideas. What was once a comfort is now seen as necessary.

The Big Lesson

When you think about development, remember this: life never stands still. As a country, a city, or even a single family gets a little better off, what they want for their life also grows and gets more complex. This is a normal part of economic growth. Old wants are transformed, and brand-new wants constantly emerge. It shows that as we improve, our hopes for a better life also improve.
